Have you ever noticed that every time you run across someone either in passing, at the check out counter, or within a conversation with a friend or family that the first question that comes out of their mouth is “how’s your day or how you doing”? Usually the response is “I’m ok, fine, fair to middling, great, outstanding, fair to partly cloudy, moderately neato, some other positive remark, or a sarcastic negative response”.

I’ve always been intrigued by that. It’s almost as how someone’s day is going will determine how the conversation is going to go. If someone is having a good day then the conversation is usually quick, to the point, and done. But if someone is having a bad hair day then the conversation will go one of two ways. One it could go the way of you are a sympathetic ear and will listen to every word this person has to say as they dump all their problems onto you because you brought up the question. Or, two it could cause a really awkwardly tense moment and you try your best to get out of the conversation by either looking at your watch or creating something else you have to do and you have to leave now.

This question is a great conversation starter or ender depending on how you look at it. But, if you are not prepared for the person to really tell you how their day is, then I suggest you don’t use this as a conversation starter because it could start a whole different thing than you originally intended. Usually I veer off to my next question/conversation starter which is “what about this weather we’re having”, which has the exact same potential for either a negative or positive response. So I am still wondering is there a better way to start a conversation, and if so what is it?

Come on, just one more bite.  You can do it, just watch one more episode of your favorite show, you don’t need to exercise.  Have another drink, your fine.  It’s going to be just me and the guys/girls, you can trust me.

Do these all sound familiar?

That is just temptation calling you and temptation is everywhere.  You don’t need that extra bite, you need to exercise, you don’t really need that drink, and a night on the town with the guys/girls has potential to end up in a strange place you have no business being at hanging around people with all sorts of bad intentions.

You have to maintain your high level of discipline so you don’t get out of control and out of sync with the things you want to accomplish in life. If your goal is to lose weight, then you have to maintain the discipline to not let temptation get the best of you regardless of what everyone else is eating.  If you goal is to write a book, then sitting around the house watching the television all day is not going to get that book written on it’s own.  And, I can assure you that drinking will lead you nowhere but down a long, slow road to problems that will still be there once you sober up.  Now hanging out with friends and family is a different thing, but you need to ask yourself “is the company that I keep in sync with my goals, or do I need new friends”?

If you answered “no” to the previous statement then I suggest you surround yourself with different people that will lead you in the right direction instead of tempting you into things that are not in sync with your goals and dreams .  Remember, temptation is lurking everywhere but you can avoid it by remaining vigilant, focused, dedicated, and most important of all disciplined enough to not fall for it’s grip on you from achieving personal and professional success.

Happy New Year and with the new year comes new year resolutions that I know we are going to faithfully keep. What are your resolutions? Before you answer that, I know that we will all resolve to lose weight, exercise more, take those college classes we been putting off, be better parents, be more proactive, and so forth. As we are all set to start working on those new year resolutions, the one thing I would like you to focus on is exercise. Now you are thinking, that is so typical, we always say that we need to exercise more and we are correct. I don’t mean just in the physical aspect but the mental and intellectual aspect as well. We need to exercise our minds as well as our bodies. You can do this by doing the following:

• Read a book
• Visit a blog
• Gain valuable knowledge and insight from a website such as Leadertank.com
• Start a conversation with a respected professional ,peer, or even a stranger
• Watch an informative video or television show
• Learn something new with your child by reading and/or engaging in a learning event with them from a book, video, or an application
• Start a debate with someone and watch how it unfolds with both individuals learning something

These are just a few tips to help you exercise your mind. Be creative and join the conversation by posting your thoughts and ideas on how to exercise your mind. I look forward to connecting with everyone as we learn new tips and techniques on how to exercise the mind.

The holiday season is upon us and stress levels are getting higher and higher. We have holiday commitments to family and friends, shopping for everyone (and we don’t want to forget anyone) at stores that are jammed packed full of people, parties to go to, a lot of driving on roads that are backed up for miles, and through it all we somehow maintain our sanity.

During these stressful times we need to learn how to relax and not let all these things get to us. Below are some holiday tips and activities that will help you get through the holidays by taking your mind off the things that are keeping you from having a happy holiday.

1. Call an old friend or family member you haven’t talked to in a while, share some old memories and wish them a happy holiday

2. Help someone you normally wouldn’t help with a project they need help with

3. Give a gift to someone in need

4. Do some volunteer work

5. Play a board game with your family

6. Lift a stranger up by wishing them a happy holiday

7. Partake in a random activity that you normally would not do or have been putting off

8. Pull out the musical instrument you have hiding in the closet and learn a holiday song

9. Make popcorn and enjoy a movie with the family

10. Be the picture taker and capture the moment of the holidays and watch as everyone smiles

These are just a few, and the list could go on and on. But it’s up to you to enjoy this holiday season. Anyone who has ever known me, knows that the most important “Right” is “Right attitude”. I hope that you all have the “Right attitude” this holiday season and may you find happiness in the smallest of things that will forever be a lasting memory, and if for some reason you cannot enjoy it, then remember, EVEN RICH PEOPLE HAVE BILLS ! ! ! LOL, Have a wonderful HOLIDAY.

“Distractions are a must”

How often to you find yourself so involved in your work that all you can think about is what it takes to get it done and meeting your deadlines so you don’t make anyone mad or even get fired?

This can prove to be a very stressful situation. Sometimes, all you need is a small distraction. Distractions are a must if you want to refresh, reset, re-energize, and refocus your mind, body and spirit.

“Regardless of how painful it is to our ego or pride, sometimes we all need a little outside perspective.”

Have you ever seen or been around one of those people that absolutely refuses to seek and/or take anyones help and/or advice? Sometimes we need a little outside perspective.

Generally speaking, when someone offers advice or help they are not trying to impose, be rude, or overstep their boundaries by thinking that you are dumb/stupid. They are merely offering a helping hand from their perspective because they seen something that maybe you didn’t.

So, the next time someone offers their assistance, don’t hesitate to at least give it a try. You never know, it may just be what was needed from a different perspective.

You have to learn to pick and choose your battles. But what if everything is a battle?  I can assure you that everything is not a battle.  Not everything is worth arguing over.  Not everything is worth your time and more importantly your energy and health.  If we let every little thing get to us and we feel we need to defend our ground, our lives would be miserable all the time and there would never be any rest for the weary.  Below are some things you should consider when picking your battle.

  1. Is the battle worth your time, effort, and energy?
  2. Can you win the battle or is it a never ending escapade?
  3. Do you have a solution to make things better, or are you just arguing for argument sake?
  4. Is there a common ground that everyone can agree upon?
  5. Does the battle even matter to the “big picture” of things?
  6. Will this battle cause resentment and undue hardship later affecting a professional or personal relationship?
  7. Will this battle have a profound impact on the lives of others?
